Three things to remember

  1. Symptoms or one negative test cannot settle the diagnosis. Consider when symptoms started, the type of test and when it was taken.
  2. Do not delay advice if you have risk factors. The 48-hour window is not an absolute deadline that rules out flu treatment for everyone. A clinician should assess treatment choices.
  3. Combine household precautions. Reduce close contact and use ventilation, well-fitting masks and cough etiquette together. No single measure provides complete protection.

Prepare three notes for a consultation

  • The date and time symptoms began
  • Whether you are improving or getting worse, and the date of any test
  • Your medical conditions and current medicines

These notes help you prepare for a conversation with a clinician. Do not use this video alone to diagnose an infection or start, stop or adjust a medicine.
