Post-Viral Cough: How Long It Can Last and When to Seek Care
A cough can continue after the fever, sore throat, and other symptoms of a respiratory infection have improved. In adults, cough duration is commonly classified as acute when it lasts less than 3 weeks, subacute at 3–8 weeks, and chronic when it lasts more than 8 weeks.

What is a postinfectious or post-viral cough?
After an upper respiratory infection, airway inflammation and increased sensitivity can make coughing persist even after the infection itself has improved. Postinfectious cough is a common cause of subacute cough.
Why the 8-week mark is not a waiting rule
Eight weeks is a classification threshold for chronic cough, not a guarantee that it is safe to wait that long. Red-flag symptoms or worsening illness should prompt earlier evaluation.
What to track at home
- the date the cough began
- whether it is dry or produces mucus
- blood in sputum
- fever, shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest pain
- whether the cough interrupts sleep, eating, or normal activity
- triggers such as cold air, talking, exercise, or strong odors
- smoking, vaping, or workplace exposures
When to seek care sooner
Seek medical advice for coughing blood, persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, significant shortness of breath, or a cough that is not improving as expected.
Emergency warning signs
CDC emergency warning signs for respiratory illness complications include difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, persistent dizziness or confusion, inability to arouse, seizures, not urinating, severe weakness, or fever or cough that improves and then returns or worsens.
Use the adult duration categories in context
The three duration categories above are adult cough classifications. They are not a diagnosis and should not be transferred to a child’s cough without paediatric advice. A clinician may assess other causes such as asthma, medication effects, reflux, or another infection.
