Who Qualifies for GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medication? BMI and Health Criteria
A BMI number can open a treatment discussion, but it cannot finish one. For adult weight management, commonly used US thresholds are BMI 30 or higher, or BMI 27 or higher with a weight-related health problem. These are not universal worldwide rules or an automatic prescription. [1]
To check your number and its limits, use the adult BMI calculator. The result alone cannot determine treatment eligibility.
A clinician also considers the particular medicine, relevant medical history, other treatments and the likely balance of benefit and harm. Insurance authorization is a separate decision.

Bring evidence of health conditions, not just a target weight
Conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes may matter for eligibility. [1] Bring recent results and a medication list, and explain what you hope to improve: symptoms, function or a specific health measure. A social-media goal weight does not substitute for a health assessment. BMI is calculated as kilograms divided by height in meters squared; it is a screening measure, not a complete description of body composition.
Check the country, product and indication
Rules differ across health systems. A diabetes brand is not automatically interchangeable with a weight-management brand, even when the ingredient is shared. Likewise, recommendations used in an Asian population may use different risk thresholds from US practice. Ask which local product label and clinical criteria apply to you. This article is about adults; pediatric treatment requires age-specific assessment and product eligibility.
Separate a prescription decision from a payment decision
Ask the clinic what clinical information it needs and ask the insurer what documentation its policy requires. Do not assume that meeting a clinical threshold guarantees coverage, or that a coverage denial means treatment has no medical rationale. A useful written plan names the intended medicine, treatment goal, follow-up arrangements and what happens if access is interrupted. Avoid starting without discussing whether ongoing care and medication are realistically affordable.
Frequently asked questions
Does BMI 30 guarantee a prescription?
No. The threshold is only part of the decision; medical suitability and the particular product still matter.
Can I use a friend’s qualifying diagnosis?
No. Your own confirmed health information is needed. Sharing medication is unsafe and bypasses the required review.
What if I qualify but cannot obtain coverage?
Ask about the reason for the decision, any applicable review process and clinician-supervised alternatives. Do not replace a prescription with an unverified product.
