Flu or COVID Absence at School in Korea: Documents and Return
For a child missing school in Korea because of flu or COVID-19, the medical return date and the attendance record are related but separate decisions. Tell the school early, obtain the evidence it needs, and confirm the return plan with the clinician and school.
This article concerns Korean school administration. An international school or a school in another country may use different procedures.

How attendance recognition is assessed
The Ministry of Education’s school-record support centre explains that absence due to a qualifying infectious disease can be recorded as attendance-recognised absence using objective documents, such as a diagnosis, medical opinion, or treatment confirmation, and the treatment period they specify. The exclusion period generally follows the doctor’s opinion. A period spent awaiting a diagnosis may also be recognised even if the eventual result is negative.
This is not an automatic entitlement to a fixed five days after every positive test. The school applies the relevant rules and reviews the documentation. The 2026 official answer directs schools to the school-health rules and education-office guidance.
Ask these questions on the first day
- Whom should I notify: the homeroom teacher, school nurse, or attendance office?
- Which document is accepted, and what dates must appear on it?
- When is the submission deadline, and is a digital copy accepted?
- How will time waiting for test results be recorded?
- What is needed to confirm return to class, PE, and any assessment?
Common document names
| Korean term | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|
| 진단서 | Medical diagnosis certificate |
| 의사소견서 | Doctor’s written medical opinion |
| 진료확인서 | Confirmation of a clinical visit or treatment |
These documents are not interchangeable in every case. Ask which one the school accepts before paying for an additional certificate, and ask the clinic to include the information the school requested.
Returning safely
Follow the child’s clinician and the school’s instructions. Ask again if fever returns, symptoms worsen, or the child cannot manage a normal school day. A negative test alone does not assess hydration, breathing, or ability to participate. Our testing guide explains the limits of a negative result.
Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, blue or grey colouring, unusual drowsiness, or serious dehydration. Do not use attendance paperwork as a reason to postpone assessment.
Keep the handover simple
Keep a private note of symptom onset, missed school dates, appointments, test results, and the agreed return date. Share the required information through the school’s normal private channel. Our household prevention guide covers protecting other family members, and the clinic-cost checklist covers questions about certificate fees.
