2026–27 Flu Shot in Korea: Does WHO’s 2027 Update Change It?
In brief: On 25 September 2026, WHO recommended the influenza virus composition for the 2027 southern hemisphere season. The recommendation guides vaccine development and regulation. It is not a new vaccination schedule for Korea’s current 2026–27 northern hemisphere season.
What WHO announced
Following an international consultation and review of influenza surveillance, the World Health Organization recommended components for vaccines intended for the 2027 southern hemisphere season. WHO reviews upcoming northern and southern seasons separately, generally twice a year. The announcement date was 25 September 2026; the target season is 2027 in the southern hemisphere.
The recommendation includes A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2), and B/Victoria lineage viruses. WHO names different H3N2 and B reference strains for egg-based vaccines than for cell culture, recombinant protein, or nucleic acid-based vaccines. A specific product’s formulation and approval must be checked with its manufacturer and national regulator.
Does it change this season’s flu shot in Korea?
Korea is in the northern hemisphere. WHO had already issued its recommendation for the 2026–27 northern hemisphere season on 27 February 2026. Comparing the WHO technical pages, the three named reference components are the same across these two recommendations within each manufacturing category. The region and target season are still different. This southern hemisphere announcement does not, by itself, change when someone in Korea should receive this season’s vaccination.
Korea’s disease control agency announced that its 2026–27 influenza vaccination programme would begin in stages from 21 September. Readers in Korea can check the Korea flu vaccination schedule and eligibility guide and the latest official notice for their own category. Readers elsewhere should use their local public health authority for scheduling and eligibility.
What the recommendation cannot tell us yet
- It cannot establish the viruses that will actually dominate next season or an individual’s vaccine effectiveness.
- Each country decides its own licensing, supply, and vaccination programme.
- Matching WHO reference names do not mean all finished vaccine products are identical.
WHO’s recommendation uses current surveillance to guide the next manufacturing cycle. Real-world performance is evaluated later against circulating viruses and vaccinated populations. This report provides general information, not individual medical advice.
