What to Eat on GLP-1 Medication: When Appetite Drops
A smaller appetite makes food quality and adequacy more important. The goal is not the smallest possible intake. Include suitable protein foods, a varied diet and appropriate fluids, and report persistent inability to eat. [1]
There is no universal GLP-1 menu or calorie target. Diabetes treatment, kidney disease, allergies, symptoms and existing dietary restrictions change the plan.
A BMR and TDEE calculator can help organize a general energy estimate, but its result is only a starting point for discussion—not a diet prescription or a basis for medication changes.

Keep structure when portions shrink
A smaller meal can still include a protein source and other food groups. For example, tofu with rice and cooked vegetables may be easier to organize than an unplanned day of snacks. This is an illustration, not an individualized diet prescription. Choose foods that fit your preferences and restrictions. Check whether convenience drinks or sweets are repeatedly replacing meals without meeting your needs.
Identify why eating is difficult
Early fullness, nausea and fear of weight regain need different responses. Easier textures or smaller meals may help temporarily, but avoid long-term exclusion of whole food groups without advice. Repeated vomiting or inability to drink needs medical review rather than further menu experimentation. [2] Mention distress about eating as openly as physical symptoms so the team can offer appropriate support.
Use supplements for an identified purpose
Protein products and vitamins are not automatically required. Review actual intake, medical history and any clinically indicated tests before selecting them. [1] A short record of portions, symptoms and fluids can make a nutrition consultation more useful. The plan should work on ordinary busy days and should not depend on constantly suppressing intake or purchasing a long list of products.
Frequently asked questions
Must I eliminate carbohydrates?
No. The appropriate balance depends on the whole diet, activity and any glucose-lowering medicines.
Can I avoid food all day if I am not hungry?
Persistent inadequate intake should be discussed, not used as a treatment target.
Can shakes replace every meal?
That is not a default plan for everyone. A structured meal-replacement approach, if needed, requires suitable professional guidance.
