Traveling With GLP-1 Medication: Storage and Temperature
Storage rules belong to the exact product and device, not just the ingredient. Single-dose and multidose presentations may have different limits, and opening the product may change the rules. Check the leaflet that came with your medicine before travel. [1,2]
Keeping an injection cold is not enough: freezing can also make it unusable. Plan for permitted temperature, cumulative exposure and the time away from suitable storage.
At a glance
| US single-dose examples | Label distinction |
|---|---|
| Wegovy pen or syringe before cap removal | 8–30°C for up to 28 days in its carton |
| Zepbound single-dose pen or vial | Up to 30°C for a total of 21 days |
| Multidose devices or another country | Do not apply these examples automatically |
| Suspected freezing or overheating | Hold use and seek product-specific advice |
Match the example to your device
The table summarizes specific US single-dose storage examples, not a universal travel rule. Both labels provide additional handling and discard requirements. [1,2] Confirm your device, expiry and whether it has been opened. Keep a record of relevant dates; returning a product to a refrigerator does not erase its exposure history.
Plan against both heat and freezing
Do not place the medicine directly against an ice pack or a refrigerator cooling element. Avoid a hot car or other uncontrolled storage. If limits may have been exceeded, contact the pharmacist or manufacturer with the temperature and duration rather than deciding from appearance. A clear-looking solution does not prove that storage damage has not occurred.
Check travel logistics separately
Arrange a way to keep the medicine with you and appropriately stored, while checking airline, security and destination rules for needles, liquids and prescription medicines. Permission to carry an item on a plane is not the same as permission to import it. Bring suitable prescription documentation and plan injection timing, accommodation storage and sharps disposal before departure.
Frequently asked questions
Does a cooler bag guarantee safety?
No. It can still become too warm or cause freezing without suitable packing and monitoring.
Can a frozen pen be used after thawing?
Do not use a product that has frozen; follow the label and ask for replacement advice.
Can I apply the 21-day rule to every tirzepatide device?
No. Multidose devices and country-specific products may differ.
