Short answer: For a more reliable home blood pressure reading, wait at least 30 minutes after drinking coffee or another caffeinated beverage. Do not subtract an estimated number from an earlier reading. Record the circumstances and repeat the measurement under consistent conditions.
Set up an accurate reading
The US CDC recommends avoiding caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand. Empty your bladder, sit quietly for at least five minutes with your back supported and feet flat, place the cuff on bare skin, support your arm at heart level and avoid talking while the device measures.
What if you already measured after coffee?
Note the result and the timing of your drink. Recheck after the waiting period, using the appropriate cuff and the same positioning. A single number does not confirm or rule out hypertension. Share repeated results with a qualified clinician rather than changing medication yourself.
When not to wait
New chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness, speech difficulties or altered consciousness need urgent medical assessment. Do not delay emergency care to repeat a home measurement.
