Reading Hemoglobin (Hb) Results: Anemia and the Difference from HbA1c

Hemoglobin (Hb or Hgb) measures the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. It is not the same test as hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), despite the similar names. Korea’s general screening addresses anemia; first check which measurement and unit are actually printed on your report.

Hb versus HbA1c

Report term Question answered Common unit
Hemoglobin, Hb/Hgb How much oxygen-carrying protein is in the blood? g/dL
Hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c/A1C What has the recent blood glucose pattern been? % or mmol/mol

Do not substitute one value for the other. A1c is used in glucose assessment and may need special interpretation in certain anemias or altered red-cell conditions.

What could a low or high Hb mean?

Low Hb can be a clue to anemia, not a complete explanation of its cause. Blood loss, iron or vitamin status, chronic conditions and other factors require assessment with your history and sometimes more testing. A higher value also needs context, including hydration. Reference intervals can differ by age, situation and laboratory methods; use the interval printed with your own result.

What to review alongside it

  1. Compare the date, unit and previous Hb results.
  2. If your report includes a complete blood count, review red cell count, hematocrit and MCV with a clinician. A full CBC is not necessarily included in every Korean screening report.
  3. Note fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, bleeding or menstrual changes, medicines and relevant conditions.
  4. Ask about the cause and whether further tests are needed before starting an iron supplement on your own.

Questions for a visit

  • Is the change from my previous Hb result meaningful?
  • Would a CBC, ferritin or another test help identify the cause?
  • Do my symptoms call for an earlier appointment?

Severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting or ongoing substantial bleeding calls for prompt medical assessment rather than waiting to compare routine reports.

Use the lab results log to record context, and the A1c guide for the different glucose test.
