The AST/ALT ratio is AST divided by ALT. Use results from the same blood draw. Review the absolute values and the reference ranges supplied by your laboratory.
How to use the AST/ALT ratio calculator
- Find AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) from the same blood draw on your report.
- Choose U/L or IU/L and enter both values. These unit labels use the same numeric activity values for this ratio.
- Read the result and its limits, then bring the original report and earlier results to a clinical visit.
Example: AST 60 U/L and ALT 30 U/L gives 60 ÷ 30 = 2.000. This number alone cannot establish a cause or diagnosis.
A ratio ≥2 is a clue seen in some alcohol-associated liver diseases. AST can also exceed ALT with cirrhosis or injury outside the liver, such as muscle injury. A ratio below 2 does not rule out liver disease. Do not use it to label a result normal/abnormal or determine a person’s alcohol use.
